Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has insisted that he does not know how long negotiations will take with Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, but is not calling off his pursuit of the Italian.

The clubs have agreed a fee of around £12m, plus £2m in bonus payments, for the Italian international, but Borini is yet to agree personal terms with the Black Cats.

It is believed that the striker is less than keen on a move back to Sunderland, despite spending a successful loan stint at the Stadium of Light last season.

And Poyet may see his top transfer target slip away despite striking a deal with the Reds.

"The agreement was with the club, not with the player”, Poyet was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"You never know how long [negotiations with the player] will take."

Borini, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2012, has managed to score just twice in 20 games for the Merseyside giants.

However, the forward found the back of the net 10 times in 40 appearances in all competitions for the Wearside club in the 2013/14 campaign.
