Manchester United are still keen to keep Paul Scholes at the club in a coaching capacity, despite his public criticism of Wayne Rooney and Ed Woodward, according to ITV.

The former midfielder was a coach under interim manager Ryan Giggs for the Red Devils’ final four league games last season, following the sacking of David Moyes.

But the Manchester United legend is yet to be offered a role by Giggs’ successor Louis van Gaal.

And it was believed that Scholes’ outburst towards Rooney and Woodward was a big reason behind his likely non-return to Old Trafford.

The ex-England international wrote on an online blog in the summer that he felt his former team-mate Rooney has left his best years behind him.

"There's a chance he's worn out. Wayne's peak may have been a lot younger than what we'd expect of footballers traditionally”, Scholes wrote.

“Age 28 or 29 has been the normal 'peak'. With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league goals in 2011-12 when he was 26."

Scholes then hit out at Manchester United executive vice-chairman Woodward for failing to bring in players that had been targeted during Moyes’ reign.

"Edward Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job. He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants”, he added.

“It's obvious that last year he didn't manage to do that. If he doesn't we are not going to get anywhere near the top."

However, now it seems Manchester United’s hierarchy are still eager to offer Scholes a coaching job at the club.
