Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is set to step up his interest in Feyenoord centre-back Stefan de Vrij after bemoaning a lack of defensive options at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is planning to play with a three-man backline next season, a formation which will require three top quality centre-backs.

And De Vrij, who he worked with as Netherlands coach at the recently concluded World Cup, has long been a potential option.

Lazio are keen on the defender, but Van Gaal is set to step up his interest, according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, after deciding he needs to increase his defensive players as quickly as possible.

De Vrij has just one year remaining on his contract with Feyenoord and has been looking to move to a bigger club in a more competitive league.
