Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes has insisted that the club do not need to sell Asmir Begovic or Ryan Shawcross to fund new arrivals.

Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper Begovic, who played at the World Cup in Brazil, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, while Premier League champions Manchester City are believed to be interested in centre-back Shawcross.

But Scholes explained that Stoke does not have to sell their star players to “balance the books.”

"We are not looking sell star players, certainly not Asmir or Ryan", he told the BBC.

"There are no requirements to sell those players to balance the books."
