Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is willing to take a “gamble” on the £16m transfer of Southampton’s teenage full-back Calum Chambers.

The 19-year-old, who made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Saints last season, is set to complete his move to the Gunners today.

Chambers, a product of Southampton’s youth system, only made his Premier League debut last season.

And Wenger acknowledged the fact that the starlet lacks experience and the English market is very expensive.

However, the Frenchman is willing to take the risk of signing Chambers because of the youngster’s ability to play in different positions.

"He hasn't played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future", Wenger told the BBC.

"He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield.

"I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions."

Chambers, who has a further three years left on his present contract with Southampton, will be the latest player to leave the club this summer, following Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.
