Sunderland are close to sealing a deal for Uruguayan winger Cristian Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid.

The 28-year-old was in Uruguay’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil and played a part in his country’s run to the second round of the tournament.

He joined the Spanish champions in 2012 from FC Porto on a free transfer and still has two years left on his contract.

However, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is keen to bring his compatriot to the Wearside this summer.

Rodriguez’s representatives were in London this weekend to close the deal out and he is expected to sign for the Black Cats, according to Tutto Mercato.
