Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has indicated that Luis Suarez’s dream of playing in Spain fuelled his performances for the Reds last season.

Suarez switched from Liverpool to Barcelona earlier this month after a scintillating season where he scored 31 Premier League goals in 33 games for the Reds and made a clean sweep of the Player of the Year awards in England.

The Liverpool captain admits he always knew that Suarez’s dream was always to play in Spain for either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Gerrard further added that the Uruguayan’s performances last season were in a way motivated to make the giants of Spain notice him, something he told him would happen if he performed.

"Luis' dream, from the first day he came to us, was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona”, the former England captain was quoted as saying by ITV.

“I said, 'If you score 30 goals for us and win the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, they will come back for you.”

Gerrard has no hard feeling towards Suarez and believes that the forward cannot be blamed for chasing his dream.

"You can't begrudge him his dream, leaving for Barca", Gerrard added.
