Arsenal are aiming to do a deal with Sporting Lisbon for midfielder William Carvalho before next weekend's Community Shield match against Manchester City.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants to add another holding midfielder to his squad and has identified Portugal international William as his preferred option.

Wenger's men came calling for William earlier this summer, but could not agree an outline of payments with Sporting Lisbon, who know the midfielder's €45m buy-out clause places them firmly in control of events.

Now, according to Portuguese sports daily O Jogo, the Gunners are preparing a fresh assault for William.

The Gunners want to wrap up the 22-year-old's signature before the Community Shield and are ready to pay €30m for the former Cercle Brugge midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal's payment terms will meet with Sporting Lisbon's approval.

William turned out for Portugal at this summer's World Cup. He has six caps in total for the Seleccao.
