Louis van Gaal has revealed that he likes Wayne Rooney’s attitude on the pitch, which led to the Dutchman making the Englishman his captain at Manchester United.

Rooney was anointed as the Manchester United captain earlier this week by Van Gaal, and Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher was appointed as his deputy at the club.

The former Barcelona manager has revealed that Rooney has readily accepted the role of being the leader at the club.

"He accepted the responsibility", the Manchester United manager said via his club's site.

Van Gaal explained that he admires the way the England striker conducts himself on the training ground and his performances on the pitch in pre-season played a big role in the decision to throw him the armband vacated by Nemanja Vidic at the end of last season.
