Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is looking forward to seeing how Louis van Gaal performs at Old Trafford, with a particular eye on the first meeting between the Red Devils and Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Van der Sar, who currently works at another of his former clubs in the shape of Ajax, played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United between 2005 and 2011, collecting four Premier League titles, one Champions League and two League Cups.

And following Manchester United finishing just seventh last term, he is relishing the start of the Van Gaal era.

"It is especially interesting to see how Louis van Gaal works at one of the biggest clubs in the world after a successful World Cup", Van der Sar wrote in De Telegraaf.

"He will have to take a squad which played an entire season without confidence in hand in a short time.

"When I hear from the people at Manchester United, Louis has brought the fear, in a positive sense, into the dressing room.

"He really is the boss, and works with a very clear vision and particular purpose. That's what United needed."

And Van der Sar is already looking forward with excitement to seeing Van Gaal go up against Mourinho, who worked under the Dutchman at Barcelona earlier in his career.

"I cannot wait for a game to go and visit and I think I'll choose United-Chelsea, the first confrontation between Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho."
