Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has praised his side for "massive performances" after they won their Premier League opener away at Stoke City today.

Villa grabbed the only goal of the game against the Potters, Andreas Weimann striking in the 50th minute to secure a 1-0 win for the visitors.

The hitman drove a shot goalwards, which proved to be unstoppable for Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Stoke enjoyed the lion's share of the possession, having the ball for 63 per cent of the match to Aston Villa's 37, while they also registered more shots on goal than the visitors, with 12 to seven.

But the three points went to Aston Villa and Lambert was delighted.
