Sevilla are expecting Tottenham Hotspur to activate defender Federico Fazio's €10m release clause, after the player's agents cancelled a contract renewal meeting.

Spurs have been increasingly linked with making a move for the 27-year-old centre-back in recent weeks, with boss Mauricio Pochettino a firm fan of his countryman's talents.

According to Spanish daily Marca, Fazio's agents cancelled a meeting with Sevilla earlier this week, at which a new contract for the Argentine was due to be discussed.

Fazio's current deal with Los Rojiblancos runs until 2018, but contains a release clause of just €10m.

Sevilla were eyeing offering the Argentine a substantial pay rise in order to drastically increase his release clause.

A similar offer had been made to Fazio's representatives at the start of the summer, but was rejected in the first clue that the defender may see his future as being elsewhere.

Fazio was snapped up Sevilla and placed in the club's youth ranks in 2007, then working his way up to the senior side.

The defender helped the club win the Europa League last term, while he also collected the Copa del Rey with the side in 2010.
