Lionel Messi's brace against Elche on Sunday has taken him closer to Telmo Zarra as the highest goalscorer in the history of La Liga.

The Argentine was in prolific form as his team overpowered their opponents 3-0 at the Camp Nou to begin their domestic campaign on a positive note.

Popularly known as Zarra, the former Athletic Bilbao star managed to score a total of 251 goals in 271 games for his club in the league.

Between 1940 and 1955, the Basque striker won the Pichichi title six times as recognition for being the top goalscorer in the league.

However, at present his record is at risk of being broken with Messi having scored a total of 245 goals in 278 La Liga games, trailing Zarra by just six.

Under their new manager Luis Enrique, Messi's side are currently on the lookout for silverware after having won no major trophies last season.

The Catalan giants take on Villarreal in their second league match on 31st August.
