New Everton signing Samuel Eto'o insists there is no specific reason he has picked the number 5 shirt at the club.

Eto'o, who was a free agent having parted ways with Chelsea at the end of last term, has penned a two-year contract with Roberto Martinez's men.

The striker, who has turned out for the likes of Barcelona and Inter, is delighted to have joined Everton, but has raised eyebrows with his choice of the number 5 shirt at the club.

The 33-year-old though has explained there was no particular reason for him picking that number.

"The received wisdom is that as you get older the numbers change", he told a press conference this morning.

"I just picked 5 like that.

"I could have asked for 22, which is the birthday of my future wife. But at the moment I'll play this season in number 5. Maybe next season I'll play in 22 or revert to one of the numbers I've worn in the past."

And Eto'o insists he is happy to be at Everton, a team he believes have developed a winning habit that he wants to contribute towards.

"First and foremost I want to play football. I met Roberto Martinez and his views correspond with mine on football.

"I can see Everton as a winning team and I want to continue that winning streak."

Eto'o scored 12 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last term.
