West Ham have moved into pole position for Rennes defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik, with the Hammers edging towards snapping up the 25-year-old.

Italian side Palermo had been aiming to sign the Cameroon international, but completed a double swoop yesterday which has seen them back out of the race.

Kana-Biyik has also been on Celtic's radar, though the Bhoys' exit from the Champions League could see their transfer ambitions scaled back.

And according to French sports daily L'Equipe, it is increasingly likely that Kana-Biyik will be playing his football at Upton Park after 1st September.

The 25-year-old tough-tackling defender started his career in the youth ranks at Le Havre.
