Swansea director John van Zweden believes the English media will be Louis van Gaal's downfall at Manchester United, because it is no respecter of reputations.

Van Zweden's side got Van Gaal's reign at Manchester United off to the worst possible start when they came away with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford in the Red Devils' Premier League opener.

Van Gaal has since led his side to a draw away at Sunderland and, earlier this week, a 4-0 League Cup drubbing away at third tier MK Dons.

For Van Zweden, it does not matter how liked by the players Van Gaal is – if the Dutchman does not perform, he will be under siege in the media.

"Listen, I'm not a fan of Van Gaal, but I do have respect for the man", Van Zweden told the Algemeen Dagblad.

"You can find him a idiot because of all his comments in the media, but players always talk positively about him", the Swansea director continued.

"But believe me, well, just as a name alone you cannot make it in England.

"Before that game [Swansea’s win at Manchester United, ed.] he was called a world-class coach in the newspapers.

"A day later he was Louis the Loser.

"That's how it is in England.

"I do not wish misery on him, but the press will be his downfall if his crop does not compete."

Van Gaal's Manchester United are next in action away at newly-promoted Burnley at Turf Moor this weekend, and will aim to register the first win of the Dutchman's reign.
