Arjen Robben is crossing his fingers for Louis van Gaal to be given time at Manchester United, with the Red Devils having made a disastrous start to life under the former Netherlands coach.

Van Gaal is still waiting for his first win in charge of Manchester United after defeats to Swansea (Premier League) and MK Dons (League Cup), and a draw with Sunderland (Premier League).

And with the Dutchman implementing a new system at Old Trafford, it has been widely claimed a number of players are struggling to adapt.

Robben, who played under Van Gaal at Bayern Munich and with the Netherlands, feels the manager's methods will naturally take time. And the winger hopes Van Gaal is handed as much time as he needs to make his system work.

"If you look at the history of Van Gaal at clubs, you always see the same. He needs time and United are not exactly a team with a lot of confidence at the moment", the Bayern Munich star told De Telegraaf.

"Van Gaal must completely rebuild after last season. He is the right person for that, perhaps the best possible coach", Robben continued.

"The problem is that in the Premier League each game is a new battle. So it will be very difficult.

"I hope he gets the time, but often that is not the case in England. The pressure increases if you do not win."

Van Gaal will aim to clock up the first win of his reign as Manchester United boss this coming Saturday, when his team lock horns with newly-promoted side Burnley.

Manchester United's first big test comes on 26th October, when Chelsea visit Old Trafford, a game that is quickly followed by a trip to Manchester City for Van Gaal's men.
