Sunderland have agreed a loan deal for Atletico Madrid defender and Arsenal target Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian defender, who joined the Spanish champions last summer from Ajax, made only ten league starts for Los Rojiblancos and struggled to cement a spot in the side last term.

With limited opportunities to make an impression, the defender is believed to be on his way out of Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal are keen to sign the 25-year-old and there were reports yesterday that they have agreed personal terms with the Belgian, though do not yet have an agreement with Atletico Madrid.

However, another Premier League outfit have stolen a march on Arsenal and are close to signing Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid.

The Black Cats have agreed a loan deal with Los Colchoneros for the Belgian international, according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

Sunderland also have the option of making the deal permanent next summer.

With Sunderland making a swift move in the market for Alderweireld, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal can salvage the deal in the last few days of the transfer window.
