England international Jon Flanagan has revealed he is close to penning a new contract with Liverpool.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has consistently explained Flanagan will be rewarded for the progress he has made at Anfield, with the defender proving to be a regular fixture for the club last term, as they pushed for the Premier League title.

Rodgers has bolstered his defensive options this summer, but is still keen to keep Flanagan and hand him an improved deal.

"There have been some talks and I should be signing a new contract soon", the full-back told his club's site.

"It would be reward for all the hard work I've put in. It would be great for me and great for my family as well.

"All I've ever wanted is to play for Liverpool and I want to stay here for as long as I possibly can."

Flanagan made 25 appearances for Liverpool last season, following a starting spot in the side's clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 2nd November.

His fine form saw him named on the England standby list by Roy Hodgson for the World Cup and he made his debut for the Three Lions earlier this year.
