Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for Monaco centre-back Ricardo Carvalho, as they bid to bolster their defence before the transfer window closes.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is keen to snap up an experienced defender and Carvalho, who has experience of the Premier League through a spell at Chelsea, could fit the bill for the Dutchman.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Manchester United are considering making a move for Carvalho, who now turns out at Monaco.

The Portuguese is thought to be open to the idea of returning to England to play for Manchester United, though it remains to be seen whether a deal will go through.

Carvalho won the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004, before moving on to Chelsea and spending six years at Stamford Bridge.
