Marseille have not made a move to sign Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Newcastle United, though the defender does remain a potential option during the last days of the transfer market for the Ligue 1 side.

It had been suggested by the British media that Marseille had reached an agreement with Newcastle for former Montpellier defender Yanga-Mbiwa.

However, according to French radio station RMC, Marseille are insistent that they have not made a move to sign Yanga-Mbiwa.

The Ligue 1 side admit the centre-back is a potential option, but have vowed to explore other avenues before turning to the 25-year-old.

Newcastle snapped up Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier in January 2013, but last term he came in for heavy criticism due to his performances for the Magpies in the Premier League.

The defender has since slipped out of the picture at St. James' Park and Newcastle are open to offloading him this summer.

Yanga-Mbiwa has been linked with several clubs in France, including Bordeaux and Monaco, but no progress has yet been made on a move for the defender.

The 25-year-old, who helped Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title in the 2011/12 campaign, has also seen his international career stall, with just three caps for France won since his debut in 2012.
