Sunderland have lodged an enquiry over the availability of Portuguese defender Rolando, as they bid to bolster their squad before the closure of the transfer window.

Rolando spent last term on loan at Italian giants Inter from FC Porto, but despite the Nerazzurri inserting a purchase option into the agreement, he has returned to Portugal this summer.

FC Porto are open to offloading the Portugal international however and according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, Gus Poyet's Sunderland have been in touch with the Primeira Liga side.

Sunderland are not alone in their admiration of Rolando however, with Everton watching developments closely, while Roma have not ruled out making a move for the 28-year-old.

Rolando started his career at Lisbon outfit Belenenses before switching to FC Porto in 2008.
