Queens Park Rangers have signed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from Reading on a four-year deal.

The 24-year-old joined Reading from Wycombe Wanderers in 2006 and has spent time on loan at clubs such as Leeds United, Brentford and Ipswich Town.

The former England Under-21 international found himself behind Adam Federici at the Royals and will compete with Robert Green and Brian Murphy for the number one spot at Loftus Road.

Harry Redknapp is delighted at the prospect of working with McCarthy and believes that the shot-stopper has the potential to become the England number one.

"He's a great young goalkeeper with a great future in front of him”, the QPR manager told the club’s official site.

"I think he's got the potential to be a future England goalkeeper one day, so to have him here at QPR is fantastic."

McCarthy has represented the England Under-21 team, but has failed to make the cut for the senior team so far.
