Sunderland are closing on a season-long loan deal for Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates.

The Uruguayan missed the majority of last season through injury and only returned to action near the end of the campaign, when on a loan spell back in his homeland with Nacional.

Coates did head to the World Cup with Uruguay and is now looking for regular first team football this season.

And it is Sunderland who are answering the call, according to the BBC.

Coates is surplus to requirements at Liverpool, who currently have a number of defensive options.
