Sheffield Wednesday have snapped up former Everton and Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe.

The Dutchman is currently under contract with Reading, but has slipped out of favour under Nigel Adkins this summer, with the Championship club keen to shed his expensive wages.

And Drenthe will bid to relaunch his career at Sheffield Wednesday, having joined the Owls on a loan deal until January.

Drenthe made 17 starts in the Championship for Reading last term, scoring two goals in the process.

The 27-year-old started his career in the youth ranks at Feyenoord's feeder club Excelsior, before going on to impress at De Kuip.

He moved on to Real Madrid in 2007, but struggled to impose himself at the Bernabeu and was criticised for an alleged unprofessional attitude.

Drenthe has won just one senior cap for the Netherlands.
