Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has insisted that Angel di Maria wanted to join his club, rather than Manchester United.

Di Maria switched from Real Madrid to Manchester United last week, costing the English giants a British record transfer fee of £59.7m.

The Argentina winger had consistently been linked with PSG throughout the summer and Al-Khelaifi claims Di Maria did want to move to the Parc des Princes, while also saying UEFA's financial fair play rules were not the reason he was not signed.

Speaking to Le Parisien, the president said: "He wanted to come to Paris.

"Yet even without the constraints of financial fair play, we would not have signed him."

PSG are thought to have refused to finance the total outlay which would have been required to sign Di Maria, a total Manchester United have been happy to pay.

The French champions have already suffered sanctions from UEFA over breaching the organisation's financial fair play rules.

They have been hit with a €60m fine and forced to limit their Champions League squad to 21 players.
