Robin van Persie has rubbished reports that surfaced at the weekend which suggested he would have to undergo a knee operation which could sideline him for months.

It was reported that Van Persie had postponed surgery to play in the World Cup for the Netherlands, but would now have to go under the knife.

For the striker, such stories are incomprehensible as they have no basis in reality.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster FOX Sports, he said: "Total nonsense", referring to the reports.

Van Persie added: "I am impressed that people have the imagination to invent something.

"I do not know where it comes from and I can say with my hand on my heart that I'm not going to the hospital in the coming days for an operation."

And Van Persie, who has been slowly building up his fitness with Manchester United after the World Cup, is pleased with his progress.

"I've had a three-week holiday and then three good weeks of training.

"This last weekend I played an hour, albeit without the desired result [0-0 at Burnley, ed.]. But I'm assuming that I'm alright."
