Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has surged towards the front of the betting in the race to become the new Leeds United boss.

The Championship side are on the lookout for a new manager since parting ways with David Hockaday last week, following a disastrous start to the season which saw the former Forest Green Rovers boss preside over a run of three defeats in their first four league games.

Academy coach Neil Redfearn has taken the reins on a temporary basis and is still the slight favourite with some bookmakers, ahead of Queiroz, to be appointed permanently.

But Queiroz has appeared almost from nowhere in the betting and is now as short a price as 2/1 with Coral, ahead of Redfearn, to be named as Hockaday's successor at Elland Road.

The Portuguese has a glittering managerial CV, which includes a spell in charge of Real Madrid and two separate stints as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

The 61-year-old has also coached a number of national teams, taking charge of the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Portugal and Iran.

Queiroz led Iran into this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

It remains to be seen if he is willing to work for an owner with as fierce a reputation for sacking managers as Leeds' Massimo Cellino.
