New Hull City signing Abel Hernandez admits Benfica wanted to snap up up from Palermo and revealed he chose the Tigers in order to play in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce's men swooped to capture the highly-rated Uruguayan striker before the transfer window slammed shut, paying Palermo a fee of around £10m for the 24-year-old.

Hernandez is happy to have headed to the KC Stadium, but admits Benfica were also on his tail, with the Premier League proving to be the clincher.

"Yes [Benfica wanted me], but the English league is the best in the world. I want to be fighting for all my worth", he told Tutto Mercato.

"I signed for three years with an option for a fourth year.

"I will do my best to hit all the targets. The first one is to survive."

And Hernandez is hoping to hit the ground running with last season's FA Cup finalists.

"I'm going to the best league in the world and it will be a wonderful experience.

"I hope to immediately be at my best. I'm ready to play in England, it has always been my dream.

"I thank Hull City for opening the door and I hope to repay their faith."
