Former Premier League referee Graham Poll believes that the use of replays allowing managers to challenge a referee’s decision is a great idea.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter indicated that the game’s governing body is ready to embrace the idea and conduct a trial as soon as next year.

"We can try in a youth competition, an Under-20, like next year when we are in New Zealand", Blatter said.

"It can only be done where there is television coverage of all the matches."

Poll believes that the current bunch of referees need help as footballers are finding new ways to make a referee’s job even tougher.

He added that a referee’s mistake is scrutinised through the help of TV replays, a luxury that the officials themselves are not afforded.

"It's a great idea”, Poll told BBC Radio 5 live.

“Everyone thinks that technology can help the beleaguered referees. The game has speeded up. Players are more crafty and deceitful than they have ever been. Unfortunately, that is a fact of life and, therefore, referees do need help.

"Everyone who watches a game on the television knows within seconds when a clear error has been made and the one guy that doesn't is the referee and that isn't fair."
