Toni Kroos has revealed that Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola was desperate to keep him at the club.

The German midfield general joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich for a transfer fee of €30m earlier this summer.

He had only one year left on his contract and Bayern Munich chairman Karl Hopfner claimed yesterday that selling Kroos was the right thing to do to prevent him walking away on a free transfer.

Kroos claims that Guardiola was desperate to cling on to him this summer, but he was not willing to accept the terms of a new deal offered by the club.

“The coach knew the situation with my contract and was determined to keep me in Munich”, the Real Madrid midfielder told Sky Deutschland.

“However the terms proposed by the club were not acceptable to me, so I decided to leave.”

Kroos admits that he was sad to give away the opportunity to work under a great coach such as Guardiola however.

“For me it was sad to say goodbye to Guardiola because he is a great man and a great coach.”

Kroos made 205 appearances for the Bavarians and won a Champions League, three league titles and three German Cups amongst various other honours at the club.
