Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes the Anfield crowd makes Liverpool dark horses to win this season's Champions League.

While Scholes' old club are out of Europe altogether following a season in which they could only finish seventh, Liverpool are back amongst Europe's elite for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign.

Winners in 2005, the Reds are outsiders for this year's crown due to their lack of recent experience on the biggest stage.

But Scholes, who won the Champions League with Manchester United in 1999 and 2008, believes Liverpool's hostile Anfield crowd could make matters tough for their opponents this term.

And that, the former midfielder believes, may hand Brendan Rodgers' men a vital edge in Europe.

"Liverpool are the dark horse of the competition this year. Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job", Scholes told ITV.

"The style of play he’s adopted is exciting to watch and the players seem to have taken to him.

"I feel they will do well with the players they have. The big advantage they have is a home crowd. Anfield is always a hostile place to go, which is something Manchester City lack."

Liverpool start their Champions League group campaign this evening when they welcome Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad to Anfield.
