Arsenal legend Lee Dixon has explained that he expects the Gunners to be a surprise package in this season’s Champions League due to the club’s summer recruits on the attacking front.

The Emirates Stadium outfit, who have never won the continental tournament, roped in winger Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in July before signing forward Danny Welbeck from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

And Dixon expects the attacking duo to play a vital part in Arsenal’s Champions League campaign this term.

The former right-back, who believes Welbeck will thrive under manager Arsene Wenger, tipped Arsenal to spring a few surprises in the knockout rounds of the competition.

“I think they are better equipped with the signings”, Dixon told ITV.

“Especially Welbeck who could really flourish under Wenger. Alexis will help with his quality too.

“Potential surprise package in the latter stages. Maybe Arsenal might surprise a few this year with Welbeck playing a more central role.”

Arsenal, who are Group D of the Champions League along with Borusia Dortmund, Galatasaray and Anderlecht, will begin their European adventure against the German giants at Signal Iduna Park tonight.
