Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has called for the Bhoys to focus on the Europa League this season, arguing Ronny Deila's men can afford to drop points in the Scottish Premiership and still win the title.

Celtic finished 25 points ahead of second placed Aberdeen last season in the league and will be looking to once again claim the crown this term.

In Europe they crashed out of the Champions League in the qualifying round and have to make do with Europa League action to keep them warm in midweek.

Sutton, who turned out for Celtic between 2000 and 2006, believes Deila should prioritise European action ahead of domestic affairs, even if that means losing games in the Scottish Premiership.

"It's vitally important for the season. I think this competition is the biggest one Celtic are in", Sutton told BT Sport.

"It's the one they can concentrate on. I'm excited by it. I think they can afford to lose games in the league and still win it.

"Albeit they have had a Champions League exit, Ronny Deila has brought in players that will spice up the attacking intentions", Sutton added.

Celtic start their Europa League group campaign by taking on Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg this Thursday away from home.
