Emile Heskey believes Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has built a squad which is stronger this season than was the case last term, despite the loss of Luis Suarez.

The Reds have started the new Premier League season with two wins and two defeats, most recently going down to a 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa.

Heskey, who turned out for Liverpool between 2000 and 2004, is of the opinion that talents such as Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, along with the players Rodgers has added over the summer, mean the Reds squad this term can be considered stronger than last season, when they finished second.

"We've got a better squad this season than, I believe, last season, missing one important player", Heskey told LFC TV.

"But we've got Sterling really coming to the fore now and he's looked exciting, Sturridge, if we can keep him fit, has looked great.

"He's added one or two and actually made it a squad that's better than last season, I believe.

"Defensively we're still getting there, but it's a lot sounder than last season", the former England international added.

Heskey picked up one FA Cup, two League Cups, one Charity Shield, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup during his spell at Anfield.
