Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala has insisted that he is not scared of competition for places in the squad.

The French international defender joined the English champions from FC Porto for a transfer fee of €40m this summer on a five-year contract.

The 23-year-old was one of the most sought-after young defenders in the transfer market and the Citizens beat off competition from a number of top European clubs to secure his signature.

Despite the big money move, the 23-year-old is yet to make his debut for the new club and is hoping that he will get his opportunity in their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich later tonight.

Mangala is not running scared of competition for places in the squad and said that a healthy tussle for places is always good for the development of a player.

"Competition is always good for me and for the team”, the Frenchman was quoted as saying by Tutto Mercato.

“The more competition you have, the more the team and the player can improve.

“I am not scared of it and I will be ready when I get my chance.”

Mangala believes that Manchester City have the quality to thrive in the Champions League, but said that the team need to do their basics right.

“We have the quality to do well but we must not forget that in the Champions League it is the small details that finally matter.”
