Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has admitted that his side are not favourites to win the Champions League this season.

The Citizens, who are in Group E of the competition along with Bayern Munich, Roma and CSKA Moscow, will begin their European adventure against the German outfit at the Allianz Arena tonight.

The Premier League champions managed to reach the knockout round of the Champions League for the first time last season, following two back-to-back exits from the group stages.

However, Kompany feels it may be “unrealistic” to pin hopes on Manchester City becoming the champions of Europe this term.

But the Belgian international, who was quick to remind fans how his side defied the odds to become Premier League winners two times in three years, wants the Etihad Stadium club to make a similar impact in the Champions League.

“It is not acceptable not to put all the trophies on our ambitions list,” Kompany told UEFA’s official site.

“Perhaps it is not realistic but we have every trophy on our list. The club is asking us to win now. In the last few years we have been very successful.

“We are not favourites but we want at least to compete and challenge.

“It was difficult to believe we could win the Premier League, but we did it. We want to try the same with the Champions League.”
