Wayne Rooney has showered Sir Alex Ferguson with praise and revealed the Manchester United manager made him instantly feel at ease when he signed for the club from Everton in 2004.

The England international played under Ferguson until last year, when the legendary manager bowed out of the game after securing Manchester United's 20th top flight title.

Rooney, who spoke to MUTV in a special programme to celebrate ten years at Old Trafford, believes Ferguson is the best manager he has ever had the pleasure of working with.

"He was vitally important. I think he is an incredible person and manager, the way you see his desire for the game. He certainly helped me a lot and helped us all", Rooney explained.

"At the time I was coming into the squad as a young lad and there were a few other young lads. He brought all that together and made us world champions. I’m very grateful for everything he’s done.

"Sir Alex is the best manager there’s been and for him to recognise my talent and want me to join this club was a great honour for me.

"I was nervous of course. It was a bit weird because I met him here at the training ground and then went to finalise it at Old Trafford. He drove me over, just the two of us in his car. I remember being nervous but he was great and made me feel comfortable."

The 28-year-old has made a total of 446 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 218 goals, and was made club captain by new boss Louis van Gaal earlier this summer.
