Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he is relieved Danny Welbeck has scored his first goal for the club, explaining if had he continued firing blanks it could have become an issue.

Wenger splashed £16m to sign Welbeck from Manchester United on transfer deadline day and again against Aston Villa today all eyes were on the striker.

Arsenal took the lead through Mesut Ozil in the 32nd minute, before Welbeck got off the mark two minutes later, scoring his first Gunners goal.

An Aly Cissokho own goal then handed Arsenal a third goal, which proved to be their last in a game won 3-0.

For Wenger, Welbeck scoring was a welcome sight because it removes pressure from the striker's shoulders.

"Of course [I’m delighted to see him score] because the longer it lasts the more people speak of it and then it becomes a problem", the Arsenal boss told the BBC.

"He got that out of the way today and I'm happy for him", Wenger added.

The Arsenal boss was also pleased with the way his side played against Aston Villa.

"We had a good chance on a free-kick and after that one we scored three goals in three minutes that killed the game off.

"We turned well between being patient and accelerating and that was a good controlled game."
