West Brom boss Alan Irvine has praised his side's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane today, singling Joleon Lescott out for special mention.

The Baggies headed into the Premier League clash against Spurs as firm underdogs, looking for their first win of the campaign.

Tottenham dominated possession, but lacked a cutting edge, struggling to break West Brom open despite enjoying 63 per cent of the ball.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made changes on the hour mark, bringing on Roberto Soldado and Paulinho, but they had no impact and James Morrison duly handed the visitors the lead in the 74th minute.

West Brom held on, delighting Irvine, who was firm in his belief that a victory for his side had been on the cards for some time.

"I thought we played really well against a really good team. They had strength to bring on from the bench. Our lads stuck to the game plan. We played with quality and they worked hard. We showed a lot of quality ability at times", Irvine told the BBC.

"Joleon Lescott was outstanding. No question. But it wouldn't be right to single Joleon out – it was a whole team of very good performers. I'm delighted, it's not relief. I didn't feel I was under a huge amount of pressure.

"I felt we've been getting closer and closer to a good result."
