Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that his side’s 3-2 loss at the hands of Crystal Palace yesterday shows the competitiveness of the Premier League.

The Toffees, who defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-0 on 13th September, took a ninth-minute lead at Goodison Park before Mile Jedinak equalised from the spot on the half-hour mark.

Further strikes from Fraizer Campbell and Yannick Bolasie after the break gave the visitors a commanding 3-1 lead, and although Leighton Baines pulled one back for Everton in the 83rd minute, it was too little too late.

And Martinez explained that Everton’s loss, coupled with West Brom’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in another Premier League fixture proved that the league is “ruthless.”

“Today [Sunday] showed that this league is ruthless”, the Spaniard told his club’s official site.

“We beat West Brom last week and we have seen West Brom beat Spurs today. This is the way this league is but we are disappointed that we had to do so much today.”

Everton, who are currently 14th in the Premier League with five points from as many games, will next face Swansea City in an away League Cup game on Tuesday.
