Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert explained that his side want to bounce back from their disappointing 3-1 loss against West Ham United at the weekend by defeating Middlesbrough in the League Cup tonight.

The Reds’ defeat at Upton Park on Saturday was their third Premier League loss of the season as they slumped to 11th in the standings with six points from five games.

And Lambert, who is poised for his first Liverpool start since joining the club from Southampton in the summer, insisted that the Merseyside giants are desperate to return to winning ways and reach the next round of the domestic competition.

The England international, whose side will face Everton on Saturday, further underlined the importance of a victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield in order to raise the supporters' hopes for the Merseyside derby.

"We want to rectify the performance and the result from West Ham", he told the club’s official site.

"Luckily enough we now have a game three days later and that's always the best way.

"We'll be desperate to get out and put in a good performance for the fans and most importantly be in the hat for the next round.

"We want to rectify that as quickly as possible and get back on track, so it's brilliant to have a game so quickly after Saturday.

“Hopefully it will give the fans a little bit more optimism going into the next game [against Everton].”
