Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is ready to switch his attention to another midfielder after Roma ruled out any chance of the Red Devils being able to snap up Kevin Strootman in the January transfer window.

Van Gaal has been keen to snap up Strootman once he returns from a cruciate ligament injury and proves his fitness. But Roma have categorically ruled out selling the Dutchman, whatever Manchester United offer in January.

Now Van Gaal is looking for an alternative and according to Sky Italia his gaze has not left Roma, with Strootman's team-mate Radja Nainggolan now the man in the Red Devils' sights.

Snapping up Nainggolan also looks a tough task for the English giants however.

The Belgium international was signed by Roma from Cagliari, initially on loan, in January this year.

The 26-year-old is highly rated at the Stadio Olimpico and Roma are not keen on losing the midfielder's services.

Nainggolan started his career in the youth ranks at Germinal Beerschot before switching to Italy at just 17 with Piacenza.
