Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that the Reds are simply making too many mistakes after they came through a League Cup test against Middlesbrough at Anfield tonight, winning an epic penalty shootout 14-13.

The Reds took the lead through debutant Jordan Rossiter in the tenth minute, a lead they held until just after the hour mark when Adam Reach headed Middlesbrough level.

The match, which saw both sides threaten but Liverpool dominate possession and chances, then headed into extra-time after finishing 1-1 in the 90 minutes.

And Liverpool looked to have booked a spot in the fourth round when Suso drilled the ball home in the 109th minute, making their dominance pay.

However, Boro refused to give up and when Kolo Toure gave away a penalty in the final minute of extra time, Patrick Bamford slotted home.

What followed was an epic penalty shootout, with both teams going through their entire line-ups once, before Middlesbrough winger Albert Adomah blasted the ball wide of the goal, with Liverpool winning 14-13.

And Reds boss Rodgers emphasised the importance of Liverpool winning, albeit while noting that his side are making too many mistakes at present.

"It was obviously a great quality of penalties. Both teams showed great composure", Rodgers told Sky Sports.

"We're very happy to get through. At the moment we're making too many mistakes, but I can't fault the character of the players.

"We had to step up to get to the next round by winning on penalties.

"But it is great for us to get through and it was a great night for our young players."
