AC Milan have confirmed midfielder Marco van Ginkel suffered a sprain to his right ankle ligament during last night's Serie A clash against Empoli.

Van Ginkel was handed a start by AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi, but was forced from the field after picking up the injury.

And now the Italian giants have assessed Van Ginkel, confirming that the Dutchman suffered a "sprain to his right ankle with ligament involvement."

AC Milan added: "The prognosis will be defined on the basis of clinical evaluation."

Van Ginkel is at AC Milan on a season-long loan from Chelsea in a bid to earn regular playing time this term.
