Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that he is yet to decide whether to extend Frank Lampard’s loan with the club beyond January.

The midfielder, who joined the Citizens on a six-month deal from MLS outfit New York City FC in August after leaving Chelsea earlier in the summer, is contracted with the English champions until 31st January.

Lampard scored the equaliser in Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with his former club Chelsea at the weekend and followed it up by bagging a brace in his side’s 7-0 triumph over Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup last night.

And although Pellegrini explained that he is still undecided on Lampard’s extended stay at the Etihad Stadium, the manager insisted that the 36-year-old is an “important” player in his squad.

“We will see what happens in January”, the Chilean told his club’s official site.

“The decision is not final and we have two or three months to decide but I don’t think that is the most important thing right now.

“Frank is a very important player and he proved that again tonight.

“I would rather have selection problems because I have too many good players than not enough so I hope he continues to play as well.

“He showed how important he can be for us against Chelsea and he did the same again tonight.

“He is 36 now and maybe he can’t play three games in a week anymore but he knows how to play football and he is a top player.”
