Everton defender Phil Jagielka has praised his side's character after they came from 1-0 down to grab a 1-1 draw away against Liverpool today.

In a tense Merseyside derby, it was Liverpool who took the lead through skipper Steven Gerrard in the 65th minute, appearing to set the Reds on the road to victory.

However, up popped Jagielka in the final minute of the game, hitting a superb, powerful 25-yard shot that flew past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

A share of the spoils was secured for the Toffees and Jagielka was pleased with the character his side showed to make sure they were not overwhelmed by Liverpool and did not lose the game.

"Hopefully next time we come to Anfield we can go one better but the point is not the end of the world", he told BT Sport.

"It has been a frustrating season so far, to go 1-0 down and keep knocking at the door showed tremendous character. We need to keep showing character.

"The lads need to keep playing the same way, keep having the courage to do the right things and hopefully this will be a kick-start to the season for us."
