Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool were unlucky not to win the Merseyside derby today.

Steven Gerrard scored in the 65th minute to give Liverpool the lead, but Everton central defender Phil Jagielka scored a stunning injury time equaliser to break the hearts of the Kop and earn a point for the Toffees in the 223rd Merseyside derby.

Liverpool, who are now without a win in their last three league fixtures, drop down to 12th in the league on seven points.

But Rodgers feels Liverpool were hard done by the eventual result and believes that his team were clearly the better side on the day but were out of luck.

"We didn't get what we deserved”, the Liverpool manager told the club’s official site.

"It was very clear that we were much the better side today. When you concede a goal like that so late on, it epitomises the luck that went against us today. But I'm certainly very proud of the players.”

Rodgers is happy with the overall performance of the Reds and believes that his team are slowly reaching the required level of performance desire by him.

He also added that Liverpool should have scored more to close out the game but expressed his satisfaction at the intensity and quality shown by his side.

"I thought the intensity was getting back up to near where we have been for 19 months. Tactically, I thought we were very good in the game. We defended very well. We took the lead, we should have arguably had at least two more and we should have had a penalty.

"It was disappointing, but I think the performance, which I'm clearly looking to at the moment, was at a much better level than we have been at.”
