Ex-Manchester United first team coach Phil Neville believes that club captain Wayne Rooney must make looking after young players part of his job at Old Trafford.

Rooney was made club captain earlier this summer by Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal and Neville has stressed the many responsibilities that go hand in hand with the armband.

Neville, who was first team coach under Van Gaal's predecessor David Moyes, believes that the captain's role at Manchester United is infinitely different to that at clubs abroad, with far more responsibility on the skipper's shoulders.

However, he also feels Rooney has made a start.

"He's got to [look out for youngsters]. That's part of his job description as a captain of Man United", Neville told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Sometimes a captain in foreign countries, all they have to do is toss a coin and choose what end they are staying at. It's almost no responsibility at all.

"But I think in England and particularly at Man United you've got so much to do, you've got the media to contend with, you've got to look after the younger players, look after the foreign players that have just come in; I saw last week when there was no obviously Champions League game for Man United, they all went out in Manchester for a team bonding session, and that would have all been organised by Wayne Rooney", he added.
