Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has failed in an attempt to convince Leeds United sporting director Nicola Salerno to head back to Italy.

Zamparini was keen on giving Salerno a role over the summer when he left his post with Cagliari, but the sporting director chose to head to Leeds to link up with former Rossoblu owner Massimo Cellino.

Salerno recently signed a one-year contract at Elland Road, formalising a role he has been undertaking since the start of the summer.

However, Zamparini has still not given up on tempting Salerno back to Serie A.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Zamparini met Salerno in a hotel and proposed he could take over as sporting director at Palermo.

But the deal-maker was forced to say no, being keen to honour his contract at Leeds, where he has just been responsible for the appointment of a new manager.

However, with Zamparini and Salerno enjoying a close relationship, the latest twist in the saga between the Leeds sporting director and Palermo may not be the end of the book.
